A total of 25 companies from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) have been listed on the newly-released 2021 Fortune Global 500 List. This year the List welcomes four newcomers: Guangzhou Municipal Construction Group, Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings, China Resources Land, and WH Group.
The Global 500 shrank a little over the past year. Total revenue for the world’s biggest companies fell by 4.8% to $31.7 trillion this year because COVID-19 slammed vast swaths of the global economy. It was the first decline in half a decade.
However, companies in the GBA still performed well despite the impact of COVID-19 and China-U.S. trade friction. These GBA companies contain nine based in Hong Kong, eight in Shenzhen, five in Guangzhou, two in Foshan, and one in Zhuhai, covering different sectors including finance, health care, and technology.
It’s the second year that China has the most companies on the List. The number of companies in mainland China (including Hong Kong) reached 135 this year, surpassing the United States (122). When adding the Taiwanese companies, a total of 143 companies from China are on the List.
