December 20 marks the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland.
Since the return to China from Portuguese rule in 1999, Macao has been governed as a special administrative region (SAR) under the "one country, two systems" policy -- a unique arrangement that allows it to maintain its capitalist system and way of life within socialist China.
In 2023, Macao's GDP amounted to approximately MOP 379.5 billion, an increase of seven times compared to 1999. Macao's per capita GDP stood at approximately MOP 560,000, ranking fifth globally. Besides, the land area has grown from 22 square kilometers in 1999 to the current 33.3 square kilometers. This is an expanded Macao, a developing Macao, and a Macao that is running ahead.
While its economy has grown steadily, Macao has also gradually diversified its industries, moving beyond its reliance on the casino sector. With the central government's support, Macao has embraced a more diversified, balanced and sustainable economic structure.
As the city gears up for the 25th anniversary of its return to China this week, here are some impressive facts about Macao that you might not know.
