The Mawan Port, built in 1989, has become the first 5G-based green and low-carbon smart port in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) after upgradation.
Located in the east of Pearl River Estuary and in the west of Nantou Island, Mawan Smart Port covers an area of 983,600 square meters, with a total berth length of 1,930 meters. The port boasts five berths, able to handle the world's largest container ships, with an annual throughput of up to 1.5 million TEUs.

Empowered by a series of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G, and blockchain, Mawan Smart Port serves as a smart port platform in the GBA, and promotes intelligent port operation and management, so as to build a "world-class" smart port.

Supported by 5G technology, the automated equipment of the port can assist operators in delivering and placing containers. Operators can also monitor the process in real time through the high-definition camera at the shore bridge to ensure the orderly operation of the smart port.
The application of a green low-carbon system enables the port to realize green development featuring comprehensive environmental protection of the port, which can reduce nitrogen dioxide emission by about 1,350 tons and carbon monoxide emission by about 450 tons per year.
June 28, 2022 marks the first anniversary of the opening of Mawan Smart Port. Over the past year since its opening, the port has handled 3,710 inbound and outbound vessels, seen throughput exceeding 1.06 million TEUs, and opened 28 new routes.
In the future, as the construction of the GBA steadily advances, the 5G-based smart port and smart logistics will witness greater development.
