GMTCM Park: a highland built by Guangdong and Macao for traditional Chinese medicine development

Traditional Chinese medicine has been passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. As an industrial park centered on it, GMTCM Park was established to serve as a major platform advancing Guangdong-Macao cooperation and promoting Macao’s moderate economic diversification.

The Framework Agreement on Cooperation between Guangdong and Macao was signed on March 6, 2011. As the first project implemented under the framework agreement, the GMTCM Park was officially launched in Hengqin in April 2011 to be jointly-operated by Macao and Zhuhai.

GMTCM Park covers an area of 500,000 square meters with a total development area of approximately 1.4 million square meters. It has now, finished the basic construction.

Since the completion of the incubation area of GMTCM Park at the end of 2018, a total of 226 enterprises have registered in the park, among which 57 are Macao enterprises fostered through GMTCM Park, accounting for 25.22% of the total. These enterprises cover a number of sectors, such as TCM, make-up, healthcare products, medical apparatus, biomedicine, and medical services.

GMTCM Park has developed specialized public service platforms with a complete scientific research service system, it boasts an R&D cluster for scientific and technological innovation that brings together renowned pharmaceutical giants, CROs, and innovation-driven resources from universities.

In terms of hardware, GMTCM Park has built a GMP pilot and production platform that meets the certification standards of Chinese mainland and the European Union, able to produce traditional Chinese medicine products in various forms, such as tablets, capsules, granules, and pills.

As for the collaboration between enterprises, universities and research institutes, GMTCM Park has cooperated with universities such as Macao University of Science and Technology, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, and Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine to translate research findings into products.

At present, GMTCM Park has set up a resource integration and exchange platform for governments, experts, traders and enterprises from the EU countries, including Portugal, Spain, and the Netherlands. 

With the development opportunities brought by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, GMTCM Park will keep promoting the moderate economic diversification of Macao.
