Top scientist Nieng Yan to return to Shenzhen, China

World's top biologist Nieng Yan announced she will resign from her tenured position at Princeton University and come back to China to establish the Shenzhen Academy of Medical Science. The announcement was made at the 2022 Shenzhen Global Innovative Talent Forum on the morning of November 1.

Founded by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, Shenzhen Academy of Medical Sciences will carry out a socialized employment mechanism. It has a council as its decision-making body, and a dean as its legal representative. By implementing a tenure system, the dean will be recruited globally and appointed by the council.

According to the Construction Plan of the Shenzhen Academy of Medical Sciences issued by the local authority, the Academy aims to become a world-class medical research institution by the middle of this century. It will mainly build "four platforms and one think tank" in accordance with the requirements of the new mechanism. They are integrated medical technology collaborative innovation platform, open medical technology resource management platform, leading medical technology basic support platform, innovative medical technology talent cultivation platform, and an intelligent medical technology strategic research think tank.

Furthermore, the academy will be built on the basic principles of giving priority to health, heeding cutting-edge technologies, co-construction, and sharing. It will focus on health-oriented major scientific problems and key technologies, and significantly advance the influence and competitiveness of medical sciences in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
